About Leah Thiessen:

Leah Thiessen’s paintings examine the natural ecology of the Australian landscape particularly the mangroves and natural bush terrain of Terranora Broadwater, NSW. Living amongst this eco system with its ever-changing imagery is the catalyst for her work.  Leah’s paintings are process based, made up of many layers.  The surfaces reveal a sense of time and depth through the act of scraping into, painting over and drawing on top. They are excavations, palimpsests of how she sees the natural world.

My focus becomes about the process of painting, which is led by intuition. I paint over, draw on top, drip paint, scrap back, leave areas of raw canvas and build up areas of thick texture. I let the line wander across the picture plane picking up the finer elements of place.(Leah Thiessen)
